  • 01 August 2008 - Qualcomm Achieves World's First HSPA+ Data Call
    Qualcomm says that it has completed the world's first data call using High-Speed Packet Access Plus (HSPA+) network technology. The call achieved a data transfer rate of more than 20 Mbps in a 5 MHz channel. HSPA+ will allow operators to double the data and triple the voice capacity of their networks compared to current HSPA deployments.

  • 21 July 2008 - Sprint Nextel Offers Software Upgrade for HTC Smar
    Sprint Nextel is offering a software update for the HTC supplied Touch and Mogul smartphones to add support for EV-DO Rev. A data speeds as well as Windows Mobile 6.1. The upgrade also includes enhanced GPS capabilities, allowing support of popular applications such as Sprint Navigation. Sprint Navigation provides audio and visual turn-by-turn directions, more than 10 million local listings, and one-click traffic rerouting, similar to an in-vehicle GPS system.
  • 18 July 2008 - Ericsson Wins HSPA Contract in Japan
    Ericsson has signed a frame agreement with a leading Japanese operator, Softbank Mobile, to expand and upgrade its HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) network. With this contract, Ericsson will expand its business with Softbank by providing enhanced HSPA on new and existing base stations in the high traffic areas of Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka.
  • 17 July 2008 - Wi-Fi Hotspots Stay Hot in 2008
    Wi-Fi hotspots are continuing their torrid growth in 2008. According to ABI Research’s WI-FI Hotspots Forecasts, by the end of this year global hotspots will grow by 40% over 2007. The greatest growth and the largest number of hotspots continue to be found in Europe. While the UK has long led in European Wi-Fi hotspots, there is also marked growth in France, Germany, and Russia.

    Apple has announced it sold its one millionth iPhone 3G on Sunday, just three days after its launch on Friday morning. The company did not say exactly where the millionth handset was sold though.

  • 09 July 2008 - Asia Pacific - W-CDMA Base Grows 74% in the Year,
    Asia Pacific saw record 3G net additions in Q1 2008 as 13.3m new connections were made, taking the total to 136.3m - a 53.7% increase with respect to Q1 2007. Here we only include CDMA EV-DO, and not standard 1x connections, as 3G; including 1x connections the total rose 37.7% to 264.3m. However, the source of growth in the base was undoubtedly W- CDMA, the 3G technology of the GSM family which accounted for almost 86% of all the mobile connections in Asia Pacific at the end of March. The number of W-CDMA customers grew 74% in the year to reach 98.4m, with a record 12.3m new customers joining in Q1 2008.

    Intel Corporation executive Sean Maloney today said more powerful microprocessors and high-speed WiMAX wireless networks will usher in a new era of the full Internet on mobile devices. During the opening keynote speech at one of the world’s largest technology trade shows, Maloney also unveiled new chipsets that make high-definition (HD) images on a desktop computer’s screen look more realistic.
  • 02 June 2008 - CDMA Subscribers Passes 450 Million Mark
    The CDMA Development Group (CDG) has announced that the CDMA industry continued its strong growth through the first quarter of 2008, increasing its customer base by almost 17% over the past year to 451 million CDMA subscribers worldwide, with CDMA2000 and CDMA2000 1xEV-DO reaching 438 million and 97 million, respectively. The Asia-Pacific (APAC) and Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) regions claimed the highest year-over-year percentage subscriber growth for CDMA2000, while the Americas and EMEA experienced the highest percentage of subscriber growth for CDMA2000 1xEV-DO.

    Femtocell and Picocell developer, ip.access has announced that Qualcomm has made a strategic investment in the company as part of Qualcomm’s European investment fund. Terms of the investment were not disclosed.

    Ericsson has launched its first LTE-capable mobile phone platform - the M700, supporting peak data rates of up to 100Mbps in the downlink and up to 50Mbps in the uplink. The M700 is optimized both in terms of size and power consumption and comparable to standard 3G platforms available today.

    Sweden's telecoms regulator, the PTS has announced that its spectrum auction in the 2.6 GHz band has been concluded, after 16 days of bidding and 112 bidding rounds. Five bidders have won licenses for the total amount of SEK2,099,450,000 (US$348 million).
  • 05 May 2008 - T-mobile Confirms 3g Launch in New York
    T-Mobile USA has formally announced the launch of its UMTS/HSDPA network in New York City. T-Mobile also confirmed that it plans to continue the rollout of its 3G network across major metropolitan markets through the year. By year’s end, T-Mobile expects its high-speed data network will be available in those cities where a majority of its subscribers currently use data services.

Today, 88% of the world's 3.5 billion mobile wireless subscriptions are to the GSM family of technologies.
  • 07 April 2008 - GSA Survey Confirms 637 HSPA Devices Launched
    GSA, the Global mobile Suppliers Association has announced that a total of 637 HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) products have now launched, representing an annual growth of 150%. The number of suppliers increased from 62 to 110 in the same period. The survey incorporates product launch announcements at recent trade shows including CES, Mobile World Congress, CeBIT and CTIA.

    The WiMAX Forum has announced that it projects more than 133 million WiMAX users globally by 2012. The forecast is based on the results of an independently commissioned research study to be published in April 2008. Additional data from the study estimates that approximately 70 percent of the forecasted WiMAX users by 2012 will utilize mobile and portable WiMAX devices to access broadband Internet services.
  • 27 March 2008 - Ericsson Demos Hspa Data Speeds Up to 42 Mbps
    Ericsson says that it will conduct the world's first demonstration of end-to-end HSPA Evolution technology with speeds of up to 42 Mbps at next week's CTIA Wireless show. Speeds of up to 42 Mbps represent the next phase in HSPA Evolution. These speeds are achieved by combining new higher order modulation technology (64QAM), together with 2x2 Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antenna technology.

    Nokia Siemens Networks has launched their downlink Dual Carrier EDGE software solution, which doubles the EDGE data speeds up to 592 kbps. Nokia Siemens Networks' Dual Carrier EDGE solution, which will be available as a software upgrade from Q3 2008 onwards is the first step in evolving EDGE.
